Options in Monterey County
Finding child care and early learning programs can be daunting – there simply aren’t enough formal child care and early education options for all children. If you are on the search, here are tools to make it easier.
Many families’ first or only choice is to rely on family, friends, or neighbors to care for their children, at least some of the time. Tools found on the “Educator Resources” page may be helpful for these informal caregivers and educators. Please share them!
For children ages 0-12 years, there are two simple ways to find licensed options, including Head Start, other center-based programs, and home-based programs:
- MyChildCarePlan.org: Use this online tool to view a map and list of options based on what you’re looking for, like days and times, zip code, age of your child, and types of care you prefer.
- Talk to a child care specialist: Call or email for an appointment at the Resource & Referral, (831) 757-0775 or rrmc@maof.org. They will guide you through a series of questions to understand your needs and preferences, and provide a list of options.
Both ways will help you narrow your options. Availability changes frequently, so you’ll need to call each provider to find an open space or to be placed on a waitlist.
For children ages 3-5 years, you may have additional options through your school district called Universal PreKindergarten (UPK). This includes Kindergarten (4-5 year olds) and Transitional Kindergarten (4 year olds). Some school districts also have Preschool programs for 3-4 year olds who meet eligibility requirements.
- Read this community magazine in Spanish or English to better understand UPK and how to choose the right program for you.
- Find your school district here to learn more about the programs they offer.
For older children, you can find after-school enrichment programs and other options for extracurricular activities through this online tool at InPlay.org.
